![]() For most of this century, the local waters were very rich in sea sponges and many Bodrum families were supported solely by sponge diving. The men and boys of the family often sailed for six months of the year seeking fresh sponge beds. With diminishing sponge supplies and with the advent of tourism, sponge diving as a profession ceased almost completely in the 1980s along the Bodrum peninsula. It is with these social, environmental and economic changes that I came upon my profession as a gulet captain. I have been sailing the local waters for 14 years now, the last six as a captain, and I thrive in sharing my knowledge of the coastline, history and seamanship with my passengers.
